What Is Emotional Freedom Technique?

The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as tapping, is a powerful stress-reduction technique. EFT utilizes the body's energy meridian points to optimize energy flow, calm the nervous system and maximize healing by touching specific points on the body and drawing attention to negative emotions. According to EFT proponents, touching the body's energy meridians with your fingertips can restore energy balance, thereby addressing physical and emotional problems.

People who use EFT tapping find that body tapping can create balance in the energy system and relieve pain. In addition, EFT stimulates acupuncture points with touch rather than needles, making it similar to acupressure. EFT has its roots in the 1970s when several physicians began stimulating acupressure points to help their patients deal with stress, fear, and phobias.

Proponents of EFT and other similar therapies argue that touching/stimulating acupoints provides the basis for significant improvement in psychological problems. EFT is sometimes likened to a psychological version of acupuncture because targeting specific points on the body can help release blocked emotions and reduce negative emotions. EFT helps you identify painful emotions and address them through psychological acceptance and energy balance by combining mental focus with physical stress at the right point. Once EFT is applied to underlying issues and memories associated with emotional triggers, their emotional charge dissipates and is neutralized through subconscious effects on the body.

EFT is a very effective way to eliminate feelings. When the unwanted feeling disappears, the limiting beliefs that the client has been holding are released. EFT training also allows clients to manage their emotional state because they can use emotions to get rid of the pain. The Emotional Freedom Technique methodology also draws on cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy, combining tapping with thoughts focused on a specific problem or traumatic experience.

EFT founder, Gary Craig, underwent the emotional release technique of Thought Field Therapy (TFT), a method created by psychologist Dr. Robert Callahan that includes traditional psychotherapy and tapping. EFT, also known as psychological tapping or acupressure, was first known in the 1990s when the developers of EFT posted information about the therapy on their website.

One study found that the Emotional Freedom Technique resulted in significant improvements in mental well-being, including reductions in anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pain and cravings, and increased happiness. In addition, initial EFT studies have shown that this method can potentially help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety associated with numerous mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), specific phobias and psychiatric disorders, and panic attacks.

Using the Emotional Freedom Technique, the patient revisits the event(s) in question; thus, the energy meridians are again disturbed. Hence, physical symptoms caused by that particular energy are balanced by correcting the meridians with EFT.

EFT uses tapping and adapts it to a simple technique for self-applying energy. EFT or tapping is a form of energy work, which is based on the idea that blockages in the body's energy fields can cause physical and psychological disorders. EFT can also be helpful for a person before an event they feel will cause stress or anxiety. However, for the touch of EFT to be effective, you must first identify the problem or fear you have.

According to Lynsey Lekraj, an epigenetics trainer and holistic nutritionist who teaches Tapping at DEN Meditation, EFT helps you "release stagnant emotions and engage your subconscious" by strategically tapping or pressing on pain points. Using EFT to reduce your overall stress levels by identifying what's causing your stress can help your brain work more efficiently overall. To perform EFT, you lightly touch a specific set of meridian points, focus on the thought, physical pain, or emotion causing the stress, and send a message to the brain, what? Then, it is safe to relax and help the body release blockages in the healing path.

According to Gary Craig, the cause of all negative emotions and distress is energy interruption. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a form of counseling based on various alternative medicine theories, including acupuncture, neuro-linguistic programming, energy medicine, and thought field therapy (TFT).
